I noticed that the people you chose were all male. Is this a reflection of Turkey, in that the population of famous authors and such is mostly men? I know that women basically live in a different world from the men in a lot of Middle Eastern countries. I’m also wondering what kind of work that these authors produce. Is it all nonfiction types of pieces? This brings up the question of what kind of literature is allowed to be produced in Turkey as well. I think that it is interesting to think that literature can be censored. In a society where one can read about things like robots falling in love or the state of the political economy, it is hard to see that people are told what they can write in other countries. Whatever the reason, political or religious, it is something that we are not used to. For me, a great portion of what we have covered in class so far has been eye-opening to say the least. I have learned a lot about the Middle East that I had not really cared to learn before. Regardless of my previous standings, I am glad I have been given the opportunity to explore the culture of places like Turkey, and it is something I believe more people should concern themselves with.
ReplyDeleteRe: Josh's comment - there are some famous female authors in Turkey - notably Elif Shafak (who was a teacher at U of A for a few years). She had to have a body guard when returning to Turkey from Tucson because she wrote about the Armenian genocide of 1915 in her novel "The Bastard of Istanbul" - and also had to face court charges for "offending Turkishness" http://www.theguardian.com/books/2007/jul/29/fiction.features1
ReplyDeleteRe: Abidin Dino - Yifei, from his name I suspect he is not of Turkish ethnicity. Do you know what his ethnic background consists of? I'm just curious.
Aha - I was sure he was not of Turkish descent "Dino, son of Rasih Dino, was of Albanian descend from Preveza, modern Greece" http://anatoliahistory.com/2011/05/31/biography-of-abidin-dino/
