Turkish dance mainly refer to the folk dance. There are many kinds of folk dances in Turkey, and Halay is one of them. The dance is performed as a symbol of creation and originality of the folk, since it is very simple and it's the most striking dance in all Turkish folk dances. Halay's rhythm is very rich. The music of dance is so symbolic. What I mean is that when people hear the music, they can probably know that it is from the Middle East. In addition, Halay has a large extend through the country, which means that even though Halay is a folk dance, it is still widely be accepted.

The start of Turkish theatre could be back to hundreds, even thousands years ago, in the period of the Ottoman Empire. At that time, dances, music and songs all performed as rituals of the inhabitants of Anatolia. With the time past, those rituals now are showing in theatre shows. Meantime, these traditional Turkish theatre includes many different theatrical performances. Like there are many different type of folk dances in Turkey, there are also different style of theatres, such as Karagoz, Meddah, Ortaoyunu and so on. Turkish traditional theatre has a significant place in Anatolian culture. Therefore, it raises to the essence of contemporary Turkish theatre. Nowadays, many theatres are showing in the Turkish State Theatre which located in Istanbul.

In the middle eastern countries they use history in everything if i can say. Folklore is used very much in their music, food and dance. I think they feel very proud with their history.
ReplyDeleteThe dance that you attached i found it very nice and it really made me to interact with it.
using the what it called the string instrument is very common in the middle east and also the drums.
about the music, rap is known that it discuss problems and it could be social, politics and so on and especially in today world the youth are very aware with what is happening around them, and i think rap is a good way for them to say their word in the country and this shouldn't be banned. Is the theater have any red lines that should not be crossed? or the freedom of speech is unlimited ?
I would also point out how similar the Halay dance is to the Levantine Dabke when they are in the line holding hands. There is also a Greek dance that is very similar that I have shown a video of some years in this class to show how some elements of the dance are regional and cross over very different cultures.
